Rydzewo is a touristic resort, located on two lakesides: Boczne and Niegocin, near the Big Mazurian Lakes trail. The village was founded in 1552 and it has about 300 inhabitants. There is a church from 1591 which belongs to the oldest monuments of sacred art in Mazury. The tourists are lured by its interior, characterized by gothic and baroque features. Unfortunately the names of its designer and builder are unknown.
Apart from the church, there are some other monumental buildings from the turn of the 19th and 20th century.
Rydzewo is a summer resort, located far away from the city noise, having great conditions for sports and angling. The marina and yacht rental are also big attractions.
Holiday time is excellent to commune with nature. The vegetation not only makes the landscape beautiful, but also helps regain health and balance. You can pick up very tasty mushrooms here as well.
In the neighbourhood there is a tennis court and a stud farm. Rydzewo has its own health center, post office, shops, bars, a great private canteen as well as beautiful spot where, among cocktail cabinets, you can sip beer with real raspberry juice and eat delicious meals of Old Polish food including fireworks. Potatoes with pork scratchings and cold sour milk are nowhere going to taste as good as in Under Black Swan Inn.
Rydzewo belongs to the Miłki commune. It is surrounded by the lakes: Niegocin, Boczne and Jagodne in the north-west, in the south there are mainly forests. More than half of it constitute mixed forests with pines and spruces. The quiet and peace that you can find here are not the only value of this area. The commune has a great touristic route – passing through Wojnowo and Buwełno to Ubik Mały.
There are horse-riding facilities allowing to ride a horse and to ride in a carriage. Some hiking, horse-riding and cycling routes are marked out.
In Miłki there is one of the oldest churches of Warmia and Mazury, dating back to the 15th century.
The commune of Miłki has a network of roads enabling to get to all the nearby towns easily. Here are also a Commune Office, a bank, a health center, post offices and shops.
OTHER RECOMMENDED ATTRACTIONS:
1. Boyen Fortress in Gizycko.
In the western part of the town there is the Boyen Fortress, built in 1844-1856. It is surrounded by a Carnot wall made of stone and brick, of 2300m long. Inside the fortress, there are historic buildings and shelters, all in very good condition. There are three touristic routs of different difficulty degree and passing time.
2. Wilczy szaniec in Ketrzyn.
On an area of 2,5 km ruins of Hitler's headquarters have remained. The headquarters were built in 1940-1944. During the WW2 overe 200 reinforced concrete and brick buildings were built here, including seven heavy bunkers.
Hitler stayed here from June 1941 till November 1944. On July 20th 1944 colonel Claus von Stauffenberg attempted to assassin Hitler, but the attempt was not successful. In January 1945 the headquarters were blown up by retreating German army. Nowadays Wilczy Szaniec is a great tourist attraction. There is a hotel and a restaurant on the spot and a camping site is located nearby.
3. Teutonic Castle.
In Barciany there is a Teutonic castle built in the 15th century. Wings with tall towers were built around a square courtyard. A gate allows to enter the courtyard. On the northern side there is a round tower from which one can see a beautiful landscape.
4. Święta Lipka.
It is a small village located in the middle of Mazury Lake District, 14 km away from Kętrzyn. There is a very beautiful church with cloisters and a great gate, so called Green Gate, one of the greates masterpieces of baroque blacksmith art. Święta Lipka is in particularly famous for its organs with 3960 pipes and 40-voice poliphony. During the concerts figures move and the spectators can see the biblical scene: Gabriel Archangel greets Mary and makes a bow, then She bows to him. At the same time the angels joyfully play trumpets, mandolines and ring bells.
